GDPR

Starting the journey to compliance

DATE: Thursday 28th September 2017

TIME: 7.30am for 8am

VENUE: Tigerlily, George Street, Edinburgh

GDPR has an implementation date of 25th May 2018, this date applies to all countries within the European Union, including the UK both during and after the Brexit process. For some companies the journey to compliance could be longer than that of others and therefore to ensure that the deadline is met it is important for data analysis to happen now. Before trying to adhere to the new legislation it is important to ensure that all current directives are clearly adhered to.

This session will help to highlight both the similarities and differences between the proposed new legislation and the current Data Protection legislation with a focus on the changes of storing personal data.

There is a need for companies to have full awareness of the types of data that are stored within an organisation as well the reviewing the policy on how long data is kept live on the network.  Are there archiving policies in place within your organisation that need reviewing? At present is there confidence within your organisation that there is full compliance with the current Data Protection Act? If not then extra time might be required in the journey to compliance.

There are now specific implications that require consideration in the process of storing personal data.  Examples of personal data will be discussed in order to highlight the different areas that might require investigation within each organisation.  A priority for compliance is to ensure that all persons concerned have given explicit permissions for a company to hold and store their data.  This might be an activity that takes a long period depending on the number of individuals who have to be contacted during this stage of the process.

For companies that have not started compliance yet, or are in the early stages, this session should provide both points of information and list of activities that are a priority in order to begin the journey to compliance.

For companies that use this type of data for marketing and promotions then this has to be a priority in the coming months, for some the task of collecting permissions might need to be carefully considered before implementation.
